How to Train Your Dog to Sit on Command in 5 Easy Steps õ
Training Your Dog to Sit
(This works with cats too!)
1. Bring your dog out into the middle of the room where there are no distractions.
2. If you dog automatically sits, try to get him to stand up again by offering him a treat. Now you are ready to start training. First, simply hold the treat about one to three inches above the dog's head. (if you hold the treat further away from his nose then your dog may try to jump to get his precious treat)
3. Your dog will then sit to get his head up higher. As your dog begins to sit say: "Sit". Don't say it too loud or to forcefully, just say it in your normal voice. When the dog sits, say: "Good boy/girl (then say your dog's name. example: "Good boy Max")"
4. Continue to repeat steps 2 & 3. Remember: keep the training sessions short, about 5-12 minutes is good. (If you're training your cat keep the training sessions between 2 and 7 minutes)
5. When you and your dog are ready, don't show the dog the treat but give it to him after he follows your command to sit.
Remember: DO NOT PUNISH YOUR DOG FOR NOT SITTING WHEN YOU ASK HIM TO. Just try again.
